Sugar
I never thought much about sugar until I decided to do a health overhaul years ago. Processed sugar is in everything, including drugs. Here are just a few forms to be familiar with.
Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is similar to granulated white sugar but has more flavor since it contains molasses syrup and is 91% to 96% sucrose.
Raw Sugar
Granulated crystals formed from the evaporation of sugar cane juice, primarily 96% to 99% sucrose, and contain a small amount of molasses.
Turbinado Sugar
It is often called “raw” sugar, but it has gone through a refining process that strips it of impurities and most molasses.
Table Sugar, Sucrose
Consists of two simple sugars, fructose, and glucose, made from sugar cane or sugar beets.
Powdered Sugar, Confectioner’s Sugar
It is made from sucrose crystals that are finely grounded and mixed with a small amount of cornstarch.
Corn Syrup
A liquid sweetener made from cornstarch and contains fructose and dextrose.
High-fructose Corn Syrup
A sweetener made from cornstarch that is similar to corn syrup but sweeter due to an enzyme-linked process that increases the fructose content.
